Adrenal vein sampling
Selective adrenal vein sampling for aldosterone is a difficult and invasive technique, but can be used to distinguish between an aldosterone producing adenoma and idiopathic adrenal hyperplasia. During the procedure, the adrenal veins are sequentially catheterised through the percutaneous femoral vein under fluoroscopic guidance and blood is sampled for measurement of cortisol and aldosterone from the right adrenal vein, left adrenal vein and inferior vena cava. Please see http://www.mayoclinic.org/medicalprofs/primary-aldosteronism.html for more detail.
